The beginning of the racing career of Cody Sommer comes from small karts. All of Cody's karting days were spent on dirt race tracks. This period of racing karts went from his tender age of 10 to 13 years old. Even with short racing experience the talents of young Cody were very evident. The decision was made by his team and father to place him in a full size race car immediately. In this effort there was a lot of critics on the lack of experience and young age that he was attempting this at. However, Cody's rookie season proved successful. He won multiple heat races, and competed with the best drivers in his division week in and week out. The end of that season in 2001 resulted in a "Rookie of the year" award. Still not old enough to drive a car on the road, respect was recieved on the racing abilities of Cody and his team.
